A replacement walk-in door is built to the clear opening of your existing box, so it does not matter who made the box. Measure the opening, the wall thickness and the hinge side, tell us whether the box has a floor, and send photos. We draw the door for your approval before it is made.
Repair or replace?
| Problem | Usually | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| Door does not close on its own | Repair | Closer and hinges |
| Torn or flat gasket | Repair | New gasket |
| Frost or sweat on the frame | Repair | Door heater circuit |
| Plug warped, cracked or waterlogged | Replace | |
| Frame bent or rotted at the bottom | Replace with a door on its own frame | |
| Door from a box that is gone or unknown | Replace |
If the problem is a freezer door that is hard to open, see why a walk-in freezer door is hard to open first.
What to measure
| # | Measure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Clear opening width | Inside the frame, jamb to jamb, at the top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest. |
| 2 | Clear opening height | Floor or threshold to the underside of the head. |
| 3 | Wall thickness | Usually 4"; some boxes are 5" or 6". |
| 4 | Floor or no floor | Floored boxes need a frame with a threshold; floorless boxes anchor the door legs to the concrete. |
| 5 | Hinge side and swing | Standing outside, facing the door: hinges on the left or the right. Walk-in doors swing out. |
| 6 | Cooler or freezer | Freezer doors need a heated frame. |
| 7 | Indoor or outdoor | Outdoor doors get a hood. |
| 8 | Heater voltage | Read it off the existing door's junction box, or ask your electrician. |
Write sizes in inches to the nearest 1/8", and say which is width and which is height. For measuring a whole space, see how to measure for a walk-in.
Plug only, or a door on a frame?
- Plug only: the door itself (the insulated part that swings), built to your opening, using your existing frame. Plugs sold separately come without hardware, so plan hinges, closer and handle.
- Door on a frame: a complete door with outside casing, plus inside casing and jamb as needed. Use this when the frame is damaged or you are cutting a new opening.
Options
- Hinged doors from 30" x 30" pass-throughs up to 5'-0" x 7'-0".
- Below-zero heavy-duty doors for freezers, 3' to 6' wide.
- Manual sliding and bi-parting doors for wide openings.
- Padlock handle, strike, inside safety release and self-closer.
- 14" x 24" heated view window.
- Aluminum diamond-plate kick plates, 10" or 24" high.
From the field
Our recent door jobs show the range: a cooler door for a 36 1/4" x 78 1/4" opening at a New Jersey entertainment venue; a freezer plug door with outside and inside casing, floor frame and heater for a 36" x 76" opening on an outdoor walk-in in New York; three 36" x 78" doors for floorless coolers in Arizona; and 36" x 84" and 48" x 84" freezer doors in Louisiana. None started from a part number. Every one started from the clear opening.

Questions people ask
Can you replace a door on another brand's walk-in?
Yes. We build to your opening, not to a brand.
Can I make the opening wider?
Often, with a new door on its own frame. Send photos of the wall around the door and we check it before quoting.
How long does it take?
We confirm the lead time on your quote. It starts when the door drawing is approved.
